The Liberty Bridge here in Pittsburgh has been undergoing a major rehabilitation, including media-blasting and repainting steel, and demolishing and replacing the bridge deck. Tarps have been hung to keep this material out of the river, and for reasons as yet unclear one of them !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! this afternoon. This was, as you can imagine, wildly entertaining for those of us with a view of the bridge:

The fire was out within an hour, and no one was hurt, but the bridge and associated tunnel are closed indefinitely until the damages can be assessed.

I grew up in Mt. Lebanon. This is weird for me to see... I’ve been across the Liberty bridge probably several hundred times, but not for years now. Moved away in 2006 and have only been back a few times. Has the river been cleaned up in the last 10 years? Back when I lived there we would have been laughing about tarps to keep debris out of a river already full of it.

For the most part yes. There’s still problems with crap being washed into the rivers during heavy rain, but it’s nothing like it used to be.
